Interaction between Kediss and Torbran

Asked by CamraMaan 3 years ago

Torbran, Thane of Red Fell (it wouldn't post when I tagged it) is my commander, and is on the battlefield with Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar (not in use as a partner...). I attack with Torbran unblocked. I do 4 damage to my initial opponent, but do I then do 4 or 6 damage to my remaining opponents due to Kediss? Say I now also have Fiery Emancipation on the BF too... Torbran does 12 damage to the first opponent, then does he do 52 damage to the remaining opponents...?

In the first scenario, Torbran, Thane of Red Fell will deal 4 combat damage to one opponent, and 6 noncombat damage to the other opponents. If you also have Fiery Emancipation out, Torbran will deal 8 or 12 combat damage. The defending player chooses the order to apply replacement effects, as they are the one being affected by them. Presumably, they'll choose to take 8 damage, so your other opponents will decide whether to take 26 or 30 damage. If they did choose to take 12 instead, your other opponents would choose between taking 38 or 52.

10/4/2019 If another effect modifies how much damage your red source would deal, including preventing some of it, the player being dealt damage or the controller of the permanent being dealt damage chooses an order in which to apply those effects. If all of the damage is prevented, Torbran's effect no longer applies

I guessing since I haven't been able to find definite rulings. Torbran would modify the damage he is dealing, increasing from 2 to 4. That damage is done. Now, Kediss triggers, making Torbran deal however much damage again, in this case, 4. Torbran deals 4, and since its new damage being dealt, he modifies it by +2, so 6 damage is dealt to each opponent.

Neotrup is right with the ruling:

Torbran is modifying the damage too, so you choose the order they apply, either tripled, then +2, or +2 then tripled. The opponent would probably choose tripled then +2 because that usually less damage.

Now say he gives triples, then gives +2. He dealt 8 damage. Kediss triggers. Again, Kediss ability is new damage so he deals 12, +2, then triples for 38 (non commander) damage.

Again, I'm just guessing based off rulings and interactions I know. If anyone knows better, feel free to correct me.
