Interaction Between Alhammarret's Archive and Kozilek, the Great Distortion

Asked by _poke_me 8 years ago

OK, pretty simple really, I have an Alhammarret's Archive into the battlefield, three (3) cards in my hand and I cast Kozilek, the Great Distortion, bringing my hand size down to two (2). How many cards do I end up with?

Do I draw up to seven (7), going from two (2) to four (4), to six (6), then seven (7) plus one, eight (8)?

Or do I end up drawing ten cards (7 - 2 = 5 x 2 from the Archive)?

When an effect tells you to draw cards based on a calculation (e.g., up to seven or until you have seven), you calculate that number first, then attempt to draw that many cards. Therefore, replacement effects that apply to those draws will apply based on the calculated number of draws that are supposed to happen.

In this case, you get 7-2=5, then 5x2=10.

The same principle applies to other kinds of calculations, such as losing half your life or doubling your life.
