How does Locket of Yesterdays interact with "flashback"?

Asked by TheGodofNight 9 years ago

My opponent has two copies of Faithless Looting in his graveyard, and he has a Locket of Yesterdays on the battlefield. We were wondering what the flashback cost of Faithless Looting would be? Since Faithless Looting is in the graveyard twice, does it reduce the flashback cost by 2 or is it reduced by one? Thanks in advance.

The first part of casting a spell is to move it from where it is to the stack. Because of this, there is only one copy of Faithless Looting in the graveyard when you determine the cost of the spell and so Locket of Yesterdays only reduces the cost by .

Isn't it that you pay a spells costs before doing anything else? or is that simultaneous with putting it on the stack?

Paying the cost is the 7th part of the 8 part process that happens when a spell is cast. The entire process is outlined in 601.2 in the comprehensive rules. A simplified version is:

  1. Move the spell to the stack.

  2. Announce modes/variables/etc.

  3. Announce targets.

  4. Announce division/distribution.

  5. Determine the total cost.

  6. Opportunity to activate mana abilities if necessary.

  7. Pay costs.

  8. Spell is cast and the appropriate player receives priority.
