How does Ixidor, Reality Sculptor interact with manifest?

Asked by jesuslovedhumor 5 years ago

I know that creatures manifested can be turned face up with Ixidor, Reality Sculptor, but can other permanents (like enchantments) be turned face up? I'm leaning toward not since he says face down creature and it would be targeting a face down enchantment, but since it is a creature while manifested I can see the other side of the argument.

Ixidor works in this case. Ixidor's ability requires you to target a face-down creature, and while face down the manifested card is a creature. That face-down creature is turned face up, what it is after that doesn't matter as long as it's a permanent.

707.8 As a face-down permanent is turned face up, its copiable values revert to its normal copiable values. Any effects that have been applied to the face-down permanent still apply to the face-up permanent. Any abilities relating to the permanent entering the battlefield don’t trigger and don’t have any effect, because the permanent has already entered the battlefield

701.33e If a manifested permanent that’s represented by an instant or sorcery card would turn face up, its controller reveals it and leaves it face down. Abilities that trigger whenever a permanent is turned face up won’t trigger.

So am I reading that right in that if the face-down creature is actually an instant or sorcery on the other side, it ultimately stays face-down (after being revealed)?

Yes. If the manifested card is an instant or sorcery you reveal it, but it never turns face up and doesn't satisfy any "turns face-up" trigger conditions. Whatever spell or ability attempted to turn that card face up simply fails and the game moves on.

The question was specifically about an enchantment or another permanent, I only included that ruling to provide a complete explanation and show there's only an explicit, rules-based limitation on those two card types.

Note that if it’s an aura that’s flipped up, it will go to your graveyard cause it’s not attached to anything.
