How does Cruel Entertainment interact with hexproof/protection?

If I cast Cruel Entertainment and only one of the chosen players gains hexproof or protection from black, what happens? Does any controlling occur? Does half the controlling occur? Thanks for your help!

A targeted spell/ability can't cause an illegal target to perform any actions, and can't cause any actions to be performed on an illegal target. A player who becomes an illegal target for Cruel Entertainment won't be affected by it at all. Though the spell will still resolve (because it still has one legal target), nothing will happen. Neither player will gain control of the other.
