How does blocking work in this scenario exactly?

Asked by Chasespartan 9 years ago

I was watching a match between two friends today, A and B.

It's A's turn and he declares his attack, a Goblin Rabblemaster

B declares his own Goblin Rabblemaster as blocking A's Goblin Rabblemaster. They're both 2/2s.

In response to the block, friend A plays Sultai Charm and destroys B's Rabblemaster.

B argues that A's Rabblemaster still dies since he had blocked it and that damage was still dealt.

Now I thought that after blockers were declared you could cast spells/instants before the combat damage step, and even though A's Rabblemaster would've still been block his wouldn't have died and B's would've died.

Who was correct in this me and A or B?

You (and A). Damage isn't dealt until the combat damage step. When A casts Sultai Charm, it's still the declare blockers step. A's creature will remain blocked, and it won't deal or be dealt combat damage.
