How do two Ayula, Queen Among Bears cards interact with the Legend rule?

Asked by vic 4 years ago

If I have one Ayula, Queen Among Bears in play and I cast a second one, can I use my old Ayula's first ability to put two counters on the new Ayula before sacrificing the old one to the Legend rule?

Yes, this will work. What will happen is this:

  • The second Ayula, Queen Among Bears enters the battlefield, triggering the first's ability.

  • In order for the trigger to go on the stack, a player would have to receive priority. Whenever a player would receive priority, state-based actions are first checked.

  • There are two legendary creatures with the same name controlled by the same player, so state-based actions require that player to choose one and put the other in its owner's graveyard. You choose to keep the new Ayula and send the old one to the appropriate graveyard.

  • Once there are no more state-based actions to handle, a player receives priority, and all the triggers that were waiting to go on the stack do so. In this case, you put the first Ayula's trigger on the stack, since it exists independently of its source. You choose which mode to use, and decide you'll be using the first mode, targeting your new Ayula.

  • Assuming no interference, the trigger resolves and you put two counters on your new Ayula.

It's important to note that you don't sacrifice either Ayula to the legend rule. It simply goes to your graveyard. This matters because some cards (like It That Betrays ) will trigger when you sacrifice a creature or permanent, but dealing with the legend rule doesn't involve sacrificing and thus won't trigger those abilities.

Thanks Kogarashi. That's great stuff. Thanks for pointing out the non-sacrifice aspect of the Legend rule. I didn't know that.

No problem. As a note, sending a legendary creature to the graveyard due to the legend rule does count as it dying, if you have abilities that trigger upon a creature dying. ("Die" in MtG means "go to the graveyard from the battlefield," which happens with the legend rule.)
