Hostage Taker: Triggered ability questions

Asked by AndreaGot 6 years ago

I am currently trying to build a Pirates Deck, and i have a question regarding Hostage Taker triggered ability.

Namely, what happens to the creature exiled and cast if it dies? Can i cast it a second time?

Moreover, can i cast the same exiled creature 2 times, having two copies of it on the battlefield?

And last, what if the hostage taker dies while the creature is on the battlefield? Casting it means that the creature is no longer exiled (so it remains under my control) or is it exiled at any time (so it goes back under owner's control)?

Thank you

1/ No, since the creature goes from the battlefield to the graveyard, rather than exile.

2/ No, once you cast the creature exiled with HT, it is on the battlefield. There is nothing else exiled with HT for you to cast.

3/ Nothing happens.

Tl;dr - If you cast the creature exiled by Hostage Taker, you can treat Hostage Taker as a card with no text on it.

To explain why things happen the way they do (which is actually surprisingly straightforward in this case):
Hostage Taker lets you cast the creature card, and just like any other creature spell, you first move it from the zone it's in (usually, this would be your hand, but in this case, it's exile) and put it on the stack. Since nothing specifies where that creature goes once it leaves the battlefield, it will be put into its owner's graveyard as normal. Due to there not being a card exiled with Hostage Taker once it's being cast, neither will it return from anywhere to the battlefield once Hostage Taker leaves the battlefield, nor will you be able to cast anything.

@Boza: ...except for Muraganda Petroglyphs :)

heya, if your question is answered to your liking, could you please choose an answer to mark the question as answered and move it from the unanswered que?
Thanks in advance ;)
