Having multiple triggers of evolve.

Asked by CheeseBro 8 years ago

say you have a 0/1 Cloudfin Raptor and say a 5/5 creature. then i cast Fungal Sprouting. does my Cloudfin Raptor get 5 +1/+1 counters because they all enter at the same time, or does it only get one?

The ability triggers five times, but you only get one counter.

Evolve has an intervening "if" clause, meaning it checks the "if" condition both when the ability is supposed to trigger and when it resolves. The ability won't trigger unless the condition is true during the trigger event. It won't do anything on resolution unless the condition is still true at that time.

Once the first evolve ability resolves, your Cloudfin Raptor becomes a 1/2. The 1/1s are no longer larger than it, so the the evolve abilities won't do anything when they resolve.

Evolve will trigger for each of them entering the battlefield, as at the time the If clause is true, but they resolve one at a time and check upon resolution too.

So the first trigger resolves, giving Cloudfin Raptor a counter, then as each of the other triggers resolve they see that the If clause is no longer true, and do not place any more counters on Cloudfin Raptor

End result is a 1/2 Raptor, a 5/5 creature and 5 1/1 Saproling tokens.
