Does casting Momir Vig, Simic Visionary trigger his own ability?

Asked by SirFowler 7 years ago

I was recently brought up by the idea that casting Momir Vig, Simic Visionary would trigger his own ability. Somehow, though, I don't think that's right. Am I wrong? Does casting Momir trigger his own ability? Or is it only when he's on the battlefield?

Momir Vig, Simic Visionary has already been cast by the time he is on the battlefield (note it is a cast trigger, not an enter the battlefield trigger). This is more clear from his Oracle text, as here (emphasis added):

Whenever you cast a green creature spell, you may search your library for a creature card and reveal it. If you do, shuffle your library and put that card on top of it.
Whenever you cast a blue creature spell, reveal the top card of your library. If it's a creature card, put that card into your hand.

His ability doesn't work when he is on the stack so he doesn't trigger himself... unless you manage to cast a second one while the first is in play under your control, perhaps.

No, he isn't on the battlefield to trigger at the time that the cast triggers would happen. If it was an ETB trigger it would depend on the wording of the ETB, but he is definitely not on the field for a cast trigger.

Both of these answers are correct, but the underlying reason is that abilities of a permanent card function only while that card is on the battlefield, unless stated otherwise. Momir's abilities don't mention that they work from any particular zone, so they function only while Momir is on the battlefield.
