Do abilities go on the stack?

Asked by BWIFL 8 years ago

If I tap Knight of the Reliquary to sacrifice a Plains, can my opponent respond by casting Lightning Bolt targeting Knight of the Reliquary?

Activated abilities and triggered abilities use the stack, and players can respond to them. The only exceptions are mana abilities, which are any abilities that (1) add mana to a player's mana pool, (2) don't target anything, (3) aren't loyalty abilities, and (4) trigger from another mana ability if they're triggered abilities. Mana abilities don't use the stack; they resolve immediately when triggered/activated.

Note, however, that once an activated or triggered ability is on the stack, it exists independently of its source. Removing the source will not counter the ability. In this case, Lightning Bolt will kill Knight of the Reliquary (assuming you have only one land card in your graveyard), but Knight of the Reliquary's ability will still resolve and you'll still get to search for another land.
