copy's of Phytotitan

Asked by Ianock 9 years ago

lets say i have 4 1/1 tokens on the field and a Phytotitan , I declare everything during (declare) attack phase. opponent has 5 creatures all with +2 power, he takes the bait and blocks. I then strive Polymorphous Rush copying the titian, the copy's would then die.

my question is would the copies of titan trigger the ability, thus giving me 4 titans next turn?

Yes and no. They have the triggered ability, and "die" (are sent to the graveyard), but tokens cannot exist anywhere but the battlefield.

110.5f A token that's phased out, or that's in a zone other than the battlefield, ceases to exist. This is a state-based action; see rule 704. (Note that if a token changes zones, applicable triggered abilities will trigger before the token ceases to exist.)

110.5g A token that has left the battlefield can't move to another zone or come back onto the battlefield. If such a token would change zones, it remains in its current zone instead. It ceases to exist the next time state-based actions are checked; see rule 704.

However if the creatures that were targeted by Polymorphous Rush were not tokens but were Elvish Mystic for example when they die the delayed trigger that Phytotitan has would return them to the battlefield at the beginning of your next upkeep, but they would return as Elvish Mystic because they cease to be Phytotitan in the graveyard

Even if they did not disappear from existence as they left the battlefield, which they would, the tokens would not come back, because they would lose the ability to come back before Phytotitan 's effect happened.

@wvrdragon: Phytotitan 's ability triggers when it dies, and the copies do have the ability at the time they die. A "dies" trigger is a special kind of "leaves the battlefield" trigger. Abilities like that trigger from the battlefield and use information from the last moment something was on the battlefield to determine if and how they trigger. The abilities on the copies will trigger.

Whether or not they actually come back later depends on whether they're tokens or cards, as explained in earlier posts.

oh ok! Rhadamanthus lets say the scenario was that i attacked with a couple of Elvish Mystic which i use Polymorphous Rush (etc). would they come back as elvish mystics as Necrohellion said or as Phytotitan ?

When something changes zones, it becomes a new game object with no relation to what it was before. This means Elvish Mystic stops being Phytotitan when it reaches the graveyard. It will remain a Mystic when it returns to the battlefield.

However, there are a few exceptions to the "no relation" bit that are in place to make certain effects work properly, one of which does apply here. Namely: an ability that triggers on something changing zones knows that the object in the second zone used to be the object in the first zone. This is why Phytotitan's triggered ability is able to work at all, and why it still works in this situation.
