Azor's Gateway (cards exiled with)

Asked by somsoc 6 years ago

I'd like some clarification about cards that are referred to by the game as 'exiled with Azor's Gateway  Flip'.

My first assumption was that this meant cards exiled with this ability of any Azor's Gateway that I play during a game, but after reading the rules (specifically 607.2b), it seems like each AG is considered a unique 'object', and so, when I exile with one of them, it only checks what cards I have exiled with that specific AG. Is that correct?

Eg, if my first AG gets removed, and I exile cards with a second AG, it doesn't care what CMC cards I had already exiled with the first one, right?

I think I've played with similar abilities where they are agnostic about which particular object exiled cards.. but I guess the wording on them was different.

Also - these exiled cards, they should be interactable for cards that refer to exiled cards, right?

201.4 is IMO a better explanation of why it only counts cards exiled by that specific Gateway. However 607.2b is a decent explanation too. Either way you are correct in saying that a second Gateway will not count cards from a removed one. If you have played with abilities that refer to their source by name and not the phrase "cards named ..." or some close variation thereof then it only meant the object that the ability was printed on.

201.4. Text that refers to the object its on by name means just that particular object and not any other objects with that name, regardless of any name changes caused by game effects.

As for your second question, if something allows you to interact with exiled cards you can interact with the cards exiled with Gateway. However if it makes the card change zones Gateway will no longer see it in exile and will not count it toward the second clause of the ability.

Belatedly, thanks for your detailed response! The extra info about the other rule is much more clear. Also good to know about the AG not seeing cards if they're no longer exiled, I hadn't thought about that.
