Auras and color protection

Asked by The_Kazekyo 8 years ago

So i was playing pauper against an aura hexproof deck, my opponent had an Aura Gnarlid enchanted with 2 Ethereal Armor, i played Stave Off on his creature declaring white as the color for the protection, i said that his auras were supposed to go to the graveyard but he said that they don't go because they're already attached to the creature and are not targetting anymore, the other guys in the store said the same thing so once and for all can anyone confirm if auras wear off or not if a creature gets color protection against the color of the aura ?

Protection prevents the following, rememberable by the mnemonic 'DEBT'

D - Damage
E - Enchanting/Equipping
B - Blocking
T - Targeting

Protection causes auras to fall off. If they still don't believe you, point them to Spectra Ward which specifically says that it doesn't cause auras to be removed.

Yeah it is as i tought, worst thing was seeing a lot of people agreeing on the same mistake, i've even shown them the rule 502.7c which states that and they still said that since the aura was previously attached to the creature it was no longer targetting it so it wouldn't detach and it changed the whole match because he won the match with that creature.

Try showing them this one if it comes up again..

702.16c: A permanent or player with protection can't be enchanted by Auras that have the stated quality. Such Auras attached to the permanent or player with protection will be put into their owners' graveyards as a state-based action. (See rule 704, "State-Based Actions.")

Yeah that's the rule that i actually showed them (i said the wrong number before) and they still said that i was wrong, that if an aura was attached to the creature before it gained protection, it wouldn't wear off because it was no longer targetting the creature, i didn't bother that much because it was a very friendly and casual tournament but it pisses me off a little to see a lot of people who call themselves veterans agreeing on something that is wrong and even worse than that, believing they are right without even giving the matter a second thought, they even said that they had the same discussion a few weeks back with another player who also said that the auras were supposed to wear off, it goes to show that they didn't even care to do a little research about the matter.
