Alternative Costs with Kaho

Asked by FearenRehnet 9 years ago

If you have a Kaho, Minamo Historian on the field and you removed Cyclonic Rift for example, could you activate its overload cost?

Converted mana cost refers to the casting cost in the top right corner. Since Cyclonic Rift costs , it's converted mana cost is 2. That means you can use Kaho's ability where x=2 to play Cyclonic Rift targetting 1 nonland permanent.

Alternate costs cannot be paid because they are different from converted mana cost.

@JexInfinite: That's not why alternate costs can't be paid.

You can only pay one cost per cast. You can pay the mana cost or an alternate cost. Kaho, Minamo Historian's ability mandates that you cast the spell "without paying its mana cost," which is a form of alternate cost. Therefore, you can't pay the overload cost.

Also, you don't activate overload. Overload is a static ability that defines an alternate cost. Only activated abilities can be activated.
