After you play a planeswalker, can you activate its final ability right away?

Asked by WBG 6 years ago

I'm playing a deck with Ajani, Mentor of Heroes and Doubling Season. My brother, who I'm playing, continues to insist the after I play Ajani, and doubling season brings his loyalty to 8, that I can't activate his -8 ability that turn because Ajani would die and therefore, the result would not resolve? Is this true? How does this work? Thank you

You can use your ability. Ajani dies and you get 100 life.

The key thing to know is that you're allowed to activate an ability as long as you have priority, can pay the costs, and are following any built-in restrictions the ability happens to have. The only built-in restrictions for planeswalker abilities are that they can only be activated at "sorcery speed" and each planeswalker can only have one of their abilities activated each turn. There's no rule saying a planeswalker ability can't be activated if it would cause the planeswalker to die, or that the ability won't resolve if the planeswalker dies.
