Abrupt Decay in response to Aether Vial activation.

Asked by Ryotenchi 9 years ago

I activate AEther Vial ---> Abrupt Decay is placed on the stack targeting AEther Vial.

  • Since I didnt tap after it was played, AEther Vial does nothing correct?

  • Im certain AEther Vial only remembers its counters if its ability is placed on the stack above Abrupt Decay, correct?

If you're activating AEther Vial's ability, then you have to tap it as part of the cost payment, which is the last step in the activation process.

Your opponent may cast Abrupt Decay only after AEther Vial's ability has been activated. At that point, the ability is on the stack and exists independently of its source.

Abrupt Decay will resolve first, destroying AEther Vial. Then, AEther Vial's ability will resolve. Because AEther Vial is no longer on the battlefield, the ability will use AEther Vial's last known information to determine how many counters it had before it was destroyed.
