Card upvoting?

TappedOut forum

I don’t know much (read, anything) about coding so I don’t know how much work this would be, but has it ever been considered to have an upvote system for individual cards? Not like a star rating like Gatherer used to be, but just like the decks or comments that we currently have, just...for cards.

Over time a system would be compiled of TappedOut users favourite cards, each user only gets to upvote once per card sort of thing.

Intriguing...

The problem with a card upvote system is that it doesn't really tell you anything that you don't already know. Good cards which which everybody knows are good will get lots of upvotes, fringe cards will get upvotes from users who try to insist to everyone the cards are good but most people won't care or will disagree and there will be a bunch of people who vorte for a card for arbitrary reasons that have nothing to do with how good a card is.

Not to mention all the vitriol towards specific cards because of the same arbitrary reasons, or the dollar cost of the cards, or how much they resemble walking dead characters.

As much as I dislike how people build a deck from just looking up cards on EDHREC, having statistics like how much does a card get played and in what kind of decks (you could cross reference hubs, deck average CMC, etc.) provides a lot more useful information which we already have access to on the website, rather than having to effectly curate the scores from scratch.

I like this idea from the perspective of card flavor anyway.

I do not think this is really helpful, for the reasons enpc outlined. There is a reason the Gatherer ended up getting rid of their own ranking system (or, more accurately, halting new votes and forever memorializing the ranking system for older cards where they were at the time the feature was removed)--it just never really worked and was not a particularly useful tool for players.

To be clear, the reason gatherer stopped doing it was because WotC removed any and all user access to the mothership like forums or comments or user profiles to log in with. With all those gone, no one could make gatherer comments anymore. WotC didn't want to deal with moderating user posts and said the equivalent of "just go to reddit and twitter lol".

The voting and star system was never really useful. (It never has been for ANY platform of ANY medium.) However the comments generated a few things: combos, deck ideas and card suggestions any user can access. All of these we have solved without resulting in potential toxic conversations about a single card, and have even shown conversation and forum topics where that card has popped in conversation, which has been FAR less toxic due to there being context involved for those conversations. Usually.

I just try to follow the rule of "If you don't have anything nice to say don't say it". The word toxic is often thrown around these days, but I believe its simply best to simply avoid or ignore those people.

Femme_Fatale, I agree with what you stated about the voting system and how TappedOut handles deck ideas/card suggestions... and by the way, thanks for all the hard work you do to maintain this website!

Fair enough. I knew why gatherer’s system didn’t work, but it was interesting at times to be able to sort cards by rating if for no other reason than to see cards I hadn’t seen before that other users found interesting for one reason or another.

But if you do that here for deck lists you will find meme decks for the most part...
