MTGO No Longer a Pile of Shit

Online Magic forum

Just read on Wizards website that the client has upgraded to, [quote] "A Pile of Trash."

I know it's hard to believe but it's 100% true.

They even said they are setting their sights HIGHER to, [quote] "The quality of your 3 month old asian take-out in the back of your fridge."

Wow. Don't even know what to think. Could this be the best news for Magic... ever?!

First off I dont actually believe those quotes. Second off the problems with MTGO go past more than just a visual and connectivity base that people besides hardcore established grinders or pure drafters still wont bother to get into it

They should follow hearthstone's example if they want MTGO to be successful, F2P, visual overhaul, etc.

But, if they want it to be really really good add some codes in the cards you can redeem online for a copy of the card in your MTGO account, of course, since cards are usually traded, the code must have some kind of security like a scratch band so you can't get the code and sell the card.

The main issue at least for me is the accessibility of cards and the pay out. I play a lot of paper magic and I understand if you want to play competitively you have to have expensive cards and be willing to put time into trading or put money into the game. However, I have put a lot of time into building a physical collection so I just dont have the time to try to trade for mtgo cards to build the decks I want (mainly standard which changes a lot). I also just cant afford to spend a ton of money on singles from these third party dealers to do what I want in the game. As far as the pay out thing I dont know how far this extends but not rewarding packs or some form of currency to obtain other cards and giving these garbage playpoints bs is stupid I cant stand that and that is a HUGE limiting factor in my ability or want to play mtgo. I believe in not necessarily being F2P but at least being able to support myself using my own skill and deck building abilities and that just doesnt allow that. I could care a lot less about visuals because I am fine playing on a visually crappy platform so long as I am having fun and as hearthstone has shown me vivid colors and bubbly graphics doesnt keep me playing the game the content does and until accessibility and rewards are fixed I just cant/ wont get into it. I know they used to and maybe still do have an option to buy like a whole standard set from them IRL and then you get some kind of redemption code to get all of those cards on mtgo as well but yeah idk

As someone else said, I just wish they would make a way you can transfer your collection and decks online rather than having to dish out more money for something you have in paper just to have it digitally.

I actually created a nice workaround for that where I only purchase cards online and then proxy for paper versions of the deck. If you actually own the cards, then they're not proxy decks, but rather transferred from mtgo.

To be honest though, the advantages of mtgo greatly outweigh the disadvantages (if any) for me personally, so I like mtgo more than playing on paper, but I only play commander and momir basic, so I don't draft or anything.

MTGO is an awful program. It's UI is fucking retarded, it constantly crashes, and the economy is broken.

I still play it though, because it's the only official way to play Magic on a computer. You can play in PTQ's and other such events there, which you just can't do anywhere else. It also works like, y'know... An actual game of Magic. As in like, it's not a shitty playtester. It functions as a way to actually play Magic. And that's why we all put up with it.

I think you forgot "in my opinion" to all those statements in your first paragraph. :P

I like the appearance and UI (the old appearance was the main reason I never downloaded it back then), it has only crashed once for me (except with disconnections, for which my wifi is to blame), and it has cards at much more affordable price for 99% of the cards compared to paper.

I'm actually a huge fan of mtgo. I haven't experienced hardly any issues, and both times I did have issues wizards refunded me completely. The only thing getting on my nerves currently is that if you want wastes in a draft, you have to draft it.

I actually think the interface is basically okay but lacks a lot of the polish that it should have. It allows for much more advanced options than say, the Magic Origins application. That application is flashy but I have found a lot of buggy interactions, and the lack of more advanced control and card options is annoying.

With the raw number of cards and interactions that exist, it would be challenging to create at this time an application that could capture all of them to that level of polish without some serious work and financing. It would, in my opinion, be a fun challenge (after all the rules are very well documented).

If I were them I'd publish the server API and let the community make its own client, and supply users with a supported in-game mechanism for trading cards instead of the current very basic chat-oriented options.
