bla bla bla, something about how overpriced packs and stuff don't actually get people into modern, bla bla bla

But really, it's kinda stupid WotC makes MM to get people into modern, then prices it extremely high. Thoughts?

Why is this the case when cards are also printed in Europe. Why wizards, why, why, why.

I'm actually rather surprised that this store is allowing Pre orders for entire boxes on Amazon. But happy to get in at the ground floor now before they change their mind.

So uh, anybody wanna lend me $250? Also Chiefbell it's just a matter of the company selling MMA2 for over MSRP whereas this company decided to sell for MSRP in the US only.

I think $350 IS MSRP in Europe.

ChiefBell says... #14

That's ok. I actually have all the modern staples I need anyway. I was never going to go in on it except to have some fun.

UrbanAnathema says... #15

Actually end up saving a little over MSRP because no sales tax.

I think I agree with most of what Chief said (though reading everything in terms of fruit loops was painful) except for the stuff about Wizards selling single cards. Their business model kinda relies on being able to sell people loads of cards they don't want, especially early in a set's release.

If they were to do that, there would have to be a significant delay between a set's release and Wizards opening up shop for singles, so people a) have to buy lots of boxes to get the cards they need if they want them early and b) can't just think "eh, I'll wait a month and buy the cards then". This applies particularly to shops which buy and open loads of sealed product before release weekend to be able to sell people their Narsets or whatever.

On the other hand, if there's a delay between release and being able to buy singles from Wizards, the effective release date for singles would be very close to the Pro Tour, so it would be better just to wait until afterwards, when prices have settled down and we know which cards are better than expected and which are worse (Narset). This means that in order to sell all the sealed product they need to, if they want to sell singles as well, Wizards have to miss out on all the hype and all the misinformed speculation which are very profitable parts of singles sales.

The tl;dr is that it would be hard for Wizards to make any sort of reasonable profit from selling singles (given how the timing works out, though that's just one factor), and it would negatively impact their sales of boxes and fat packs and the like anyway. So it seems unlikely that that'll happen.

I wasn't really requesting it, I just thought it was interesting to talk about.

KrosanTusker says... #18

Yeah, it was an interesting point.

Also, about prices in Europe vs US, and since we're talking about Modern Masters:
An original Modern Masters 1 box from the largest UK retailer goes for the equivalent of $500 (SCG, for comparison had it last for $400).
The other point is that they still have loads in stock. 10+ is like "we've got so damn many of these things it'd take too long to count them". It's like it says "Left in stock: hella". CFB and SCG don't have any. Like why is this!?

April 22, 2015 4:12 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #19

Because no one wants to pay $500 for something we can get elsewhere for 20% cheaper. We live in the internet age. UK shops charging $500? Use ebay US to get them for $400.

KrosanTusker says... #20

Yeah, that's fair. I dunno how much there still is floating around on ebay, but sure that's a better alternative.

@ ChiefBell my LGS has a pre-order price of 200 Euros per Box which is roughly 215$, so I don't think it's a "Europe-Problem" it's more or less a "UK-Problem"...

ChiefBell says... #22

Must be. Can't source a single UK Shop for less than 350 dolla
