EXTREME NEW FORMAT

The Kitchen Table forum

I came up with a cool idea for a new format. Basically, it's like normal magic, but after the game, shuffle the loser's deck, then reveal the top card. Put that card in your deck, then play again. continue until a player has no deck left. If you're really evil, then the overall player keeps the cards. If you're REALLY evil, then both of you are not allowed to eat, drink water, or sleep. Opinions?

This sounds a great deal like Ante, a banned in Vintage mechanic. Please no.

No one here is going to even THINK of considering to play it. Play it yourself, no one else will want to.

"Ante is strictly forbidden in DCI-sanctioned play, and is only allowed in unsanctioned games where not forbidden by law."

This is just a form of ante, which has been around for hundreds of years already.

My opinion is that I really hope you're trolling. Ante is banned for a reason. It's total garbage. Noone will play this if their cards are at risk.

Alternative: You just play Magic. As much as I'm in for new stuff, this sounds bad. I play my Orzhov Control deck and my friend plays his Golgari deck. I win, I reveal his Grizzly Savage. I win again, I reveal his Forest. We play again, I draw the Grizzly Salvage. I lose, because I have the Salvage in hand and can't cast it when I'd need a removal spell. He reveals the top card, finds an Elspeth, Sun's Champion. At some point, we'll both have 6 cards in the deck that we can't cast. We screw because we draw each others basics, we lose because we draw three cards we can't cast. There's no appeal in this. Even if someone keeps winning, at some point, with 90 to 30 cards and all the core cards from the one deck, it's just 30 games that are highly irrelevant.

I'm sorry, but I just don't see where this is a lot of fun. If anything, make it so that the loser choses some number of cards from the winners deck and they have to not-play it in any following Game or so. We used to play it like that when we played soccer. He, who scored the goal, has to leave the field until one team has no player left, that team wins.

if you are taking the loser's card and putting it in your deck, its gonna blow if they're using different colors than you. now you have an dead card added to your deck

It's only ante if you keep the cards afterwards. They could easily be given back at the end of the match.

To make this work, you'd need to build the decks specifically for it. swkelly89 already explained why.

The problem with this is: Even if your not keeping the cards afterward, this basically turns magic into a really, really, really long game of War. You play the first game, the loser goes down a card, now in the second game the loser has 59 cards and their deck becomes slightly faster. With each successive game the player who has lost the most becomes statistically more likely to win and get their cards back. Repeat forever.
