Release Day Draft Question

Here’s the deal: a new local game store (the only one within an hour drive) has a draft night for guilds of ravnica Saturday. It starts at 5pm. I want to support them (and I haven’t been to a release/draft in ages) BUT I’d only be able to attend the first hour and a half or so and I know sometimes it’s a drag to show up to an event and get a bye when you really wanted to play... So the question is:

Would you rather a free win and bye during your guilds of ravnica drafting this weekend, or no free win and another game? (e.g. should I draft knowing I’ll only be able to play one round?)

I generally would rather play the game than have a bye. I’m not going to MTG events to win packs or turn a profit, but rather to play the game.

That said, I also understand that Magic is a pretty big time commitment, so do not begrudge people who have to leave early.

That said, in addition to others’ feelings, you should consider the timing - between drafting, time for deck construction, and time for the first round, you’re only going to be able to play one round before you have to leave. Personally, I would not think that is worth it, but it is up to you.

Above is on point. Still, I'd like to point out that Guilds is a banging set and people will likely still want to draft this quite a bit next week. I'd try to show up for next week for a better experience.

I always get disappointed when i receive a bye. If I enter an event I came to play not sit around waiting.

the only person whose fun you should worry about is your own. nobody can force you to play magic if you don't want to. even with only 1 round to play in, a draft can still be worth it if you simply look for cards you'll want in your constructed decks, or just take the $ cards or rares. since you wont be staying for the entire thing, it makes more sense to just grab what you need/want rather than trying to force a certain deck in order to win the event.

the other thing to keep in mind is that there will likely be bye rounds anyway regardless of if you show up or not, or whether you leave early or not. its just not something you really have control of, so no sense worrying about it.

I go to my local store every Friday for draft knowing full well I'm probably going to only get two rounds in. The guys I play with either appreciate the bye to help the position in the tournament, or play someone else that is hanging out waiting during that time. I've never seen one person complain about getting a bye at my store. I get wanting to play but I also go to hang out with my group of players, and build my collection.
