MTG and money

I was talking to a friend of mine who doesn't play Magic about Magic, since he'd asked about the card box in my hand. He tried to steal it (as a joke) and I made a flippant comment about how he better bring that back because there's a good five hundred dollars of cards in there. He was so shocked that I would spend so much on cardboard rectangles, he almost dropped the box.

Do you guys think that spending money on cards is really that weird? I was surprised that he thought it was such a big deal, but what else would I do with the money? Buy an Xbox?

Have you guys experienced similar situations?

First time I explained to my parents how much I was spending on Magic back in high school, I had to use the analogy of the Stock Market, and how i'm not "Just blowing my money away", i'm investing it.

But yeah, people who don't have hobbies like Magic tend to not be able to comprehend just how expensive a hobbie can be.

I've only started playing recently myself, so i dont have decks worth five hundred dollar. But mtg is an expensive hobby no matter how you look at it, and because it comes in the form of cards, i dont think its strange you get weird looks.. These people can't understand how much fun is involved, so you can't really blame them. Just make sure you dont get yourself into financial trouble : PYou shouldnt care about the opinions of the pre-judgemental : P

i personally dont think its that weird, even though you dont need to spend that much to have fun.

like ThatBlueMage i also wanted to make the point of calling it an investment.. but thats not always the case, a ton of cards also drop in value, and you'l never get someone to buy it for the new-price, do you?

Well.... Think about it like this:

How much does a deck cost? maybe 100$ in average. How much time are you having fun while playing it? A lot. Like.... If you go to a lot of FNM or playing with your friends... You can easily use hundreds of hours playing that one deck. 100 hours/100$ is equal to 1$ pr hour. Is that a lot of money? Not really :D

Lets compare it to something else. What does it cost to go to the cinema? Maybe 15$, and you can then have fun for like 1.5 hours. That's 10$ pr hours....

Remember that you are spending your money on something, that you are having fun doing :D

I find it hard when people drop 3K cash on a deck... That being said, i do have some pricey cards in my decks (Plateau , Vendilion Clique , Karn Liberated ), but I didn't drop the bucket and spend $150. I traded / waited for really good deals to alleviate the bank.

Also, with a 5K deck, are you playing in tournaments where you win prizes?

another point is this:

You buy cards, and its something your going to get hours and hours of enjoyment out of.

Spending money on a hobby is fine, there's nothing weird about it. Although if you take a deeper a look at humanity's tendency to spend money on hobbies it is a bit weird.

Magic is not the stock market though. Don't think of it like that. I can't remember the last time I got paid dividends when someone using Abrupt Decay won a match. I mean if you want to make real money, you'd be better off going for that.
