Competitive: why or why not?

General forum

Just to get an idea of the current makeup of active users on T/O, I want to know if you like to play competitively or not, as well as the reasons for your disposition.

I play very competitively, having attended a few GPs and finishing in the money. I try to play as many PPTQs as my work schedule allows, which admittedly isn't many in recent months. Something about striving for the highest level of competition just appeals to me, such that my goal is to eventually go to a Pro Tour (and do well there).

I used to be an extremely active user on the site, helping many users with decks and participating in discussions. However, I feel like most of the content I have seen from users lately has veered more toward the casual side of things, which has deterred me from participating as much as I used to a few years back. Are players like me declining in the demographics of this site? If so, that's still great; I enjoy all aspects of the game and enjoy seeing Magic content in all its forms. I was just really interested in the general mindset of our current user base.

I have not played in any GPs or PPTQs, but I would say I lean toward a competitive mindset. With that being said, I want to win in my own way. Thus, I'm more of a Johnny-Spike who likes to build creative, abnormal decks that are decently competitive.

I play high-powered decks, but I am not competitive because it's my personality.

In recent months, I have become quite the grinder, but I try to not over do it. Like, i'm not going to freaking california from chicago for an SCGOpen. But I take part in all that I can around here. I'm very lax about my play though, due to the fact that I play the game because I love the game. I'm never going to call a judge on my opponent unless there is a rules question that we / I have, or if there's a serious game rules violation (Example, SCGIndy, I was playing burn, buddy guy opponent casually throws two creatures back into his graveyard from exile with two Deathrite Shaman in play). I treat my opponent how I want to be treated. Unfortunately, I seldom get the same treatment at bigger events.

I tend to play competitively and gravitate towards decks that allow me to do so. When I get the rare opportunity to play a FNM event, I Top 8. My life situation doesn't allow me to get out much, but cest la vie.

I'd travel to Grand Rapids, Indy, or Chicago for an event, if the opportunity and funds ever arose. In any case, I enjoy the game around a kitchen table with my friends and a few beers just the same.

I play competitive, and have just started going further afield than my hometown to play in said way.

Most people around the LGS are semi-competitive in that they play to win, but most of them don't play top tier decks to do so.

I have a more casual playgroup as well, and that's all well and good, but sometimes you just get the need for that intense playing that only comes from a bigger tournament setting.

I play socially. Our EDH games range from casual to non-combo cutthroat. Modern is competitive, although I try to use homebrews rather than tiered decks. Legacy is competitive, but it's also proxy so nothing really on the line for those. Finally, our Limited is super casual, just having a good time and always rare drafting.

Basically I enjoy playing, and I only really focus on beating my opponent instead of just having fun if it's a 60 card Constructed. Also I don't really bother going to events outside of my local area, mainly because it costs too darn much.

I just started getting into magic back in november. I love the competitiveness and have been to a few local tournaments. I plan on going further by doing PPTQ's this summer and a grand prix in november. I played a lot of casual with my friends when I first started but now I actually get bored of it, and honestly just wanna play against competitive decks/players most of the time.

I try to make good decks, but have very little money to work with, so my real world decks are mostly hyper-budget.
