Lets get Jund-y. —June 18, 2016

So another local modern event went down. There were 28 players, which equaled 4 rounds of swiss and a cut to top 8. I went in feeling good, and knowing a pretty good selection of the playing field, I felt that I could really have a chance to capitalize on some sideboard testing. Namely, Shadow of Doubt and a single copy of Blightning. And may i just say, neither of them disappointed!

Round 1: CoCo Elves. Game 1 the opponent scooped on his turn four after having his first three elves get killed and Scavenging Ooze was looking hungry. On my turn 1 in game 2, though, He should have scooped. I opened with a turn 1 Engineered Explosives with 1 charge counter and said, "pass". homeboy didn't play any more 1 drop elves and i was free to snipe the play Kalitas and snipe 2 drops. I had 5 zombies by the time it was over. fuck his feelings. 2-0. This was also the first match finished, so I had some time to scope the rest of the scene.

1-0-0

Round 2: UWR Merfolk... Yes, that is correct. Game 1 was pretty breezy, I was on the play and cast inquisition. I saw some fish, blue sources and a lightning helix. ooooookay. I cast goyf, for a veritable beef wall and cast liliana the next turn and started doing what jund does. Game 2, I figured I should prepare for a "go wide" strategy instead of letting the other two colors dictate what I SB. Good call. In game two, my opponent got riggety-riggety-WRECKED! Explosives on 2 set the tone and a pair of 3/4 goyfs with anger of the gods let him know that I was not fucking around. 2-0.

At this point, I should also mention that Kalitas had mad an appearance during at least one of the games in each match. And helped significantly to the wins.

2-0-0

Round 3: Breach/Shift. Game 1 I kept an okay-ish hand of 6. My scry was terrible so that went to the bottom. I got dominated on turn 4 with a breach Emrakul thing. so that sucked. Game 2, I saw no Sideboard cards and even though I was able to grind him for a while, the random top decked Scapeshift is still a thing. 0-2.

2-1-0

Round 4: Naya Burn. The guy borrowed the deck from a mother player, and didn't have Goblin Guides, so he went with Vexing Devil. And in Game 1, it showed why devil is a terrible card. He cast devil, and I allowed it to stay. and then bolted that mother fucker. sad opponent was sad. I was also accused of having, "no chill". whatever. The opponent scooped after I got 2x goyfs up to 6/7's, (land, instant, sorcery, enchantment, creature, tribal). Game 2. Everything was going pretty well for him. I cast ooze next to a 4/5 goyf. I have 3 mana open. I activate ooze at 5 life. he responds. I am thinking, "gotcha, bitch". He casts Atarkas Command. modes, 3 damage and no life gain... I respond with Feed the Clan with ferocious trigger. Boom. he scoops. 2-0.

3-1-0

Everyone wants to split at this point and go home, and there was one guy who said no, that he wanted to play it out. It also happens that he was my next opponent. and it ALSO happens that he thought that Jund is a great matchup for him and that he just "doesn't lose to that pile of crap."

TOP 8. vs. Infect. Game 1, he mulliganed to 4 and played an ink moth nexus. I play ghost quarter and pass. He slumps. I think that was his only land. he scooped when he tried to pump ink moth and I fucking murdered it. game 2. I literally had no real amazing card to bring in against him. So i started shuffling. He started complaining about how, "good cards don't make a good player" and how "easy it is to just fill a deceits with good cards", etc etc. Game 2, I thought seize him on turn 1 and notice he only has 1 creature and 1 land and some pumps. awesome. I take the dude. next turn, I play goyf. Next turn I play goyf and leave bolt open. Bolt his guy. untap, swing and bolt. He scoops. I say, "hmmm. that was easy." 2-0.

TOP 4. Breach/Shift... again. Game 1 I had the nut curve. Inquisition, goyf, lilli, more goyf, kalitas. He was stuck on two lands and no ramp spells. sweet. Game 2... this game was grind as all hell, he had two leyline of sanctity in his opener. and plays both. I had pulse in mine. So i was like, hell yeah. after I bombed the leylines, I thought seized, and snatched Primeval Titan, and then surgical-ed it. sweet, just only have to worry about scpaeshift and emrakul. At one point he pitched Emrakul to liliana and did that whole "graveyard to library thing". then I cast slaughter games. Naming scapeshift. I told him, "lets play a game I like to call, you lose your wincons". After a few turns of killing and edicting his Obstinate Baloths, I managed to swing with a pair of Goyfs for the win. I actually took a few minutes to collect myself because that game 2 was intense. 2-0.

Finals. Mono Blue Merfolk. We went into all three games. nothing really to note other than he took full advantage of my game 3 mulligan to 6 with 3 Spreading seas. I just could not bring the match to a halt. and I wished I had Golgari charm that night.

All in all, I would say it was a success. Blighting was beast in the combo match, (breach). And I finally moved up to 2x Kalitas in the main +1x Huntmaster main, I really like that configuration. I swapped the Fulminators for Shadow of doubt in the side, and still do not have an accurate assessment on them. More to follow.

Nice update man. I played my jund build last night and got wrecked, but I think a lot of it was poor sideboarding and decision making lol. Glad to see that Shadow of Doubt is wrecking things. Definitely gonna try it!

hey dude just wanted to let ya know that i tried 2x Blood Moon in the sideboard of my jund deck the last time i played modern. its moderately difficult to set yourself up to not get screwed by it, but i totally got the drop on an rg scapeshift player round 2 - they couldn't do anything and i beat them down with a fulminator and goyf lol. round i got too, largely in part (i think) to them fetching less efficient lands in case i played blood moon again.

i don't know if that would be helpful info at all but that looked like a matchup you were trying to find a new approach to.

scrotality, thanks. I will keep that in mind. For me, I am looking for cards that can hedge against other matches. my local meta is too healthy for blood moon to be my bullet. crazy that I am able to say that right now.
