Long time casual player of Magic, and I have dropped out of the game a few of times, coming back around Onslaught through to Kamigawa before dropping out again until Return to Ravnica where I played religiously until Amonkhet before once again dropping out.

Coming back in mid 2021, looks like things certainly ramped up in Commander, which is what I generally play, although I have dabbled a little with Modern.

Hah, Taniwha was a "lovely" gift, thanks for that one. I also feel that the Darkstell Potato does pretty well for crappy gifts, so nice work on it's inclusion ( Darksteel Relic ). It's always annoying to know that I am giving you cards and life for an rumpy darksteel turd I cannot simply destroy!

Play Test Update 1

Finally got chance to play the deck in person! Learned a few things about the deck that were useful, and important too.

  1. list text hereThe deck is fun to play! I think this is the most important thing. got three games out of it and found I enjoyed both winning and losing because of the interactions in the deck.

  2. The manabase was inconsistent and too slow. There were way too many tapped lands in the deck, and some that I thought were useful such as the Ravnica Karoos were simply too slow and too much of a tempo loss. In a deck that wants tempo, this is not a good thing.

  3. Signets are not ramp. Got Boros Signet in hand more than once, and it felt bad every time. It, just like the Karoos is too slow, and really isnt the kind of ramp this deck wants.

With these lessons learned, I made some quick changes to the deck.



Rakdos Carnarium Too slow, too much of a tempo loss.

Boros Garrison See previous.

Boros Signet Too slow to be real ramp, not what the decks needs.

Ur-Golem's Eye Too little impact for too high a cost. Need more coloured mana for a lower cost.

Shambling Vent Ugh. Got this out twice and I hated how slow it was. It never felt good in hand, and I never wanted to see it. I'd rather have had a basic.

Reliquary Tower Never needed to worry about hand size, don't need a colourless source.

Temple of Malice A fairly tough cut to be honest. I actually found the Scry really rather useful, but needed to balance the colours more, so off it went.


Springleaf Drum Something to do with the tokens I can create, or use creatures to help cast others.

Path of Ancestry Mana fixing, and a little extra filtering too.

Arcane Signet Pure and simple ramping! A much better card than Ur-Golem's Eye in this deck.

4 x Plains PUre and simple, the deck needed more basics! This also allowed me to balance the colours better too.

Cannot wait to play this deck again, it's really good fun to play even if it is a blatantly sub-optimal strategy in EDH.

Test of Endurance is another durdly lifegain win condition too, and with a fair number of ways of gaining life, it becomes useful.

Thanks Albogrease you raise a couple of very good points. I realised that my win con of the Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond combo wasnt in yet as one part is still in the post (and thus not yet in the deck). But this made me think more: what else am I using to win by, rather than durdle round and play cards?

So far I have:

The previously mentioned combo

Exsanguinate for a big wipe out, and protect its casting with counterspells (fragile I know).

Felidar Sovreign plus any lifegain pieces I have to win of its trigger.

If you have any ideas on this I would very much appreciate the suggestions!

As for Cabal Coffers again you actually make an excellent point! I will get on an try and get my hands on a Tolaria West to tutor for the required land. Really appreciate that catch.

Ah see, that makes sense. At least the Flying gives it some reasonable evasion. Those Cipher spells are all good fun if you can pull them off. I can see why Minds Aglow would be a better choice than Blue Sun's Zenith .

I remember now why my Nekusar, the Mindrazer deck is abandoned!

I see you still have Master of the Feast in there, despite reckoning it not worth the slot. You could put something like Blue Sun's Zenith in in its place. That way you have targetted, instant speed draw for your self, or a way to hurt just one opponent, which can be handy for political reasons at the table. What's more, the card replaces itself by returning to your library, and so is more useful than the big fat flying demon.

I don't think I have anything useful to add as a suggestion, but will have a look and see if there is anything obvious from my Nekusar deck, as mine is on the side lines currently.

Caerwyn that is a very good point! My meta doesnt feature much in the way of Trample but if that changes then back in they go!

Made some changes after I got some better cards!


Wall of Caltrops Too weak, too expensive, too Banding!

Jareth, Leonine Titan Doesn't really fit in with the theme, and lacks synergy, so had to go.

Wall of Shields Too expensive, and still too Banding

Wall of Air Yes it flys but it doesn't do much else, and gets replaced by something much better.


Sylvan Caryatid It provides mana of any colour, its Hexproof and is a decent cost too. Handy!!

Charix, the Raging Isle Very cheap for such a big beater in this deck, with added value.

Dragon Throne of Tarkir Something to help out the few none Defender creatures in the deck.

Hornet Nest A great token maker that will produce very useful tokens in this deck. A defender to boot!

A small update to the deck. The following cards were removed:

Beloved Chaplain Didn't do enough in the deck, other than boost the Cleric count.

Cathars' Crusade A great card! But, I have no idea why I put it in this deck, as there is little point in the +1/+1 counters. Going wide and attacking is not what this deck wants to do.

These cards are the replacements

Corpse Knight Allows me to rob life from people when I have creatures come in. Sounds like a plan to me!

Remorseful Cleric Handy graveyard hate, handy in my meta. Keeps the Cleric count up so serves a better purpose than the Beloved Chaplain .

First Pass Update:

Having acquired some cards specifically for this deck, I have made a few changes, which are as follows:


Cloudchaser Kestrel Already have a creature I can recur for enchantment removal, which is also one mana cheaper. Yes, I lose a flyer, but removal is more useful than a tiny chump blocker.

Nekrataal Useful, but has too many restrictions on what it can destroy. I think I have better options.

Rakdos Signet Doesn't do enough, and is too slow for an aggro deck.

Zulaport Cutthroat A card that I love but doesn't do enough in this deck to warrant an place.

Swords to Plowshares No other reason other than I need the copy elsewhere! Goes into the maybe board in case this deck sees heavy play.

New Cards

Nahiri, the Harbinger Both the plus and minus ability help out in this deck. The plus ability allows more creatures into the graveyard for Alesha, Who Smiles at Death to target, and the minus ability helps with removal.

Savai Crystal An upgrade on Rakdos Signet as it provides all three colours of mana, and doesn't slow the deck down. Yes it's one more to cast, but doesnt require mana to activate and has the added gravy of being a Cycling card too, if I need to draw a card.

Judith, the Scourge Diva Small bump to creatures which is handy, and the ability to deal targetted ping damage to a target. A really useful target to get some Deathtouch on I think.

Thrilling Discovery Card draw, dumps cards to the graveyard and some incidental lifegain. Not a bad trick I am hoping.

Subira, Tulzidi Caravanner Makes creatures unblockable, very useful for several creatures in this deck. Also allows for my hand to be cycled if I can get a creature through.
