you may play that card this turn

Asked by 9-lives 3 years ago

What does "you may play that card this turn" mean? Does it mean cast it without paying mana costs? Or is it just a way to say 'you may cast and pay mana costs for it this turn'?

An example card is Embodiment of Flame

"Play" is shorthand for "cast it (if it's a spell) or play it (if it's a land)." In either case, land or nonland, you play it the same way you would as if it was a card in your hand. You can only play one land per turn, and you have to pay any costs to cast the spell. If something gets cast for free, it will specifically say "play (or cast) it without paying its mana cost."

Thanks! Good thing that was cleared up for me, otherwise I would be fielding different cards completely, haha.

Yeah, this effect is generally referred to as "impulse draw" because you're sorta drawing cards but you can only play them during a limited period.
