Would To the Slaughter take care of Emrakul, the Promised End?

Asked by mickslash77 7 years ago

Let's say my opponent has just played Emrakul, the Promised End which is his/her only creature and at their end step cast To the Slaughter. Would the player have to sacrifice Emrakul, the Promised End which has protection from instants?

Yes, they would. Protection protects against damage, being enchanted/equipped, being blocked and being targetted (easily rememberable by the DEBT acronym). Since To the Slaughter doesn't do either of the above, Protection doesn't do anything here.

Well, To the Slaughter does target, but it targets the player, not the creature, so protection won't save the creature in this case.

True, I of course meant it doesn't do either of those to Emrakul :)

@ Epochalyptik: Actually, to engage in the technicalities: Protection would save the creature if the player had it, but since it's Emrakul who has protection, it doesn't ;] (it would primarily prevent the player from casting it in the first place, as the player would be an illegal target in that case... unless, of course, we're talking Seht's Tiger)
