Would Chief Engineer + Mycosynth Lattice be a valid combo?

I may have missed this somewhere. But I wanted to ask for clarity. Fairly certain that Mycosynth Lattice wouldn't work with Chief Engineer for playing cards from the hand using the convoke ability as the cards in hand are colorless. Since they're not in play I figured they're not artifacts yet. Am I correct in this belief?

You are correct - permanents only exist on the battlefield, so Lattice will only turn cards in play into artifacts.
