The "wastes mana" you are unsure about is just colourless mana - that is what it is called - which now has been given a symbol to represent it.

Kruphix, God of Horizons causes any unused mana to become colourless but remain in your mana pool. All of this colourless mana could be used to pay for costs that specifically require . It can also be used like mana of any colour to pay for generic mana costs .

Generic and colorless mana are different things.

Generic mana appears in costs. It isn't a type of mana that can be produced or spent. It's a way of indicating a cost that can be paid with any kind of mana.

Colorless mana is mana that isn't one of the five colors. You can produce and spend it. With OGW, some cards now explicitly require colorless mana, and those costs cannot be paid with other kinds of mana.
