With Marchesa, the Black Rose work with creature tokens?

Asked by JoJaBi 9 years ago

If I have Marchesa, the Black Rose and a creature token with a +1/+1 counter on it in play, can I sac the token and expect it to return to play at beginning of the next end step?

No, creature tokens can only exist on the battlefield. If a creature token is removed from the battlefield, it is removed from the game. More specifically, if the token changes zones, it's removed from the game.

But do tokens ever "touch the graveyard"? If a token creature dies while Algae Gharial is in play, will Algae get a +1/+1?

I figured that it probably wouldn't make sense for tokens to return to the battlefield under any circumstances but I wasn't sure because of the whole '"touch the graveyard" thing.

@nayaftw: That's misleading.

Tokens can change zones, but only once. When a token leaves the battlefield, it remains in its new zone until state-based actions are checked, then it ceases to exist. This is not the same as RFG, as RFG is synonymous with exile.

To answer the followup question, you'll get the counter. Tokens can change zones, so relevant abilities will trigger.

Okay, so Algae Gharial and things like that would get the counter, but Marchesa, the Black Rose wont bring tokens back. Thanks guys!

Correct. Note that Marchesa, the Black Rose 's ability will still trigger because it checks that the object that died is a creature, not whether it's a token. Also note that the ability says "return that card." Tokens are not cards, so the ability wouldn't apply to them.
