Will I control a God card if I do not have the devotion
Asked by Lloyd156_BLUE 9 years ago
I control Rubinia Soulsinger and my opponent has a Erebos, God of the Dead with devotion. If I tap Rubinia and gain control Erebos but I don't have the devotion when he comes under my control. What happens?
Erebos stops being a creature as soon as you gain control of it. You will still retain control of it for as long as Rubinia Soulsinger remains tapped. I'll provide a more detailed explanation in a sec.

But since Rubinia states 'You control target creature' and Erebos wouldn't be a creature, would I still control it?

@Lloyd156_BLUE Her ability only cares that the targeted creature is a creature until the ability resolves. If it stopped being a creature it is still the same object so the control changing effect still applies to it as long as she is tapped.

Rubinia Soulsinger's ability only cares that Erebos, God of the Dead was a creature when it is targeting him or when it resolves. So long as Erebos's controller had devotion five or greater at both of those times the ability will resolve.
When the ability resolves it sets up a continuous effect with a duration that will last until the game arrives at the end of it's designated duration. In this case the effect is that you control Erebos, and the duration is as long as you control Rubinia and she is tapped.
This is noticeably than a static effect that says you control a creature, such as Control Magic. In that case you'd take control of Erebos, he'd immediately stop being a creature, the aura would fall off as a state-based action, and you'd immediately lose control of Erebos again.

He isn't a creature if his controller doesn't have the proper devotion. So if you have him under your control, the other abilities would still apply, but he isn't a creature.
