Will exiling a Synod Sanctum with Myr Welder allow me to put all the cards exiled with Myr Welder onto the battlefield?

Im pretty sure it works, I would just like to know for certain before I spend time trying to build a deck around such things (It looks like it would be really fun).

Relevant Gatherer ruling:

If an activated ability of a card exiled with Myr Welder references the card its printed on by name, treat Myr Welders version of that ability as though it referenced Myr Welder by name instead. For example, if Lux Cannon (which says, in part, T: Put a charge counter on Lux Cannon.") has been exiled by Myr Welder, Myr Welder has the ability T: Put a charge counter on Myr Welder.

So in this case the second ability for Synod Sanctum would become, upon being hijacked by Myr Welder, "(2), Sacrifice Myr Welder: Return to play under your control all cards removed from the game with Myr Welder."

A bit clunky as you sacrifice him for the effect but it seems like it'd work, yes.

I want to make sure I understand the question. You have a Synod Sanctum in your graveyard and you exile it with Myr Welder. Myr Welder now has the activated abilities of Synod Sanctum and so you activate the sacrifice ability it has gained. You want to know if this will return all the cards you have exiled with the Myr Welder to the battlefield.

If that is the sequence then yes that works. When an ability refers to the permanent it is on by name it means "the permanent that this ability is on". It does not matter if the name of the permanent has changed or if something with a different name has somehow gained the ability. Synod Sanctum's second ability does not specify that it only returns cards exiled with its first ability so any cards exiled for any reason with the permanent that the second ability is on will be returned to the battlefield.

Thanks, a lot! It is a bit awkward, but I just love making strange and monetarily cheap combo decks.

Gidgetimer that is indeed what I meant, thanks for the affirmation.

This will only work for cards you exile with the other ability Myr Welder gains from Synod Sanctum, not the Myr's own first ability. This is because the abilities on Synod Sanctum are linked abilities (the Welder's printed abilities are also linked), and they can only be linked to each other. Here are the relevant sections of the CR:

607.1. An object may have two abilities printed on it such that one of them causes actions to be taken or objects or players to be affected and the other one directly refers to those actions, objects, or players. If so, these two abilities are linked: the second refers only to actions that were taken or objects or players that were affected by the first, and not by any other ability.

607.2a If an object has an activated or triggered ability printed on it that instructs a player to exile one or more cards and an ability printed on it that refers either to "the exiled cards" or to cards "exiled with (this object)," these abilities are linked. The second ability refers only to cards in the exile zone that were put there as a result of an instruction to exile them in the first ability.

607.5. If an object acquires a pair of linked abilities as part of the same effect, the abilities will be similarly linked to one another on that object even though they weren't printed on that object. They can't be linked to any other ability, regardless of what other abilities the object may currently have or may have had in the past.

Apparently I was wrong. Looks like I need to go back to double checking the CR on some things.

Thanks for the answer though Rhadamanthus.
