When exactly does Mana empty from my pool?

I understand that after each phase it empties but I'm unclear as to what is considered a "step" and a "phase."
The interaction in question is if I have a Waste Not on the field and my Siren of the Silent Song untaps, causing my opponent to discard a land, does that mana stay in my pool until I declare my main phase or can I carry it over through my upkeep and draw step?

Mana empties from mana pools at the end of each step and phase.
In this case, Siren of the Silent Song's ability is handled during the upkeep step. Waste Not's ability will also trigger in this step, so you'll get your mana during upkeep. The mana is emptied from your mana pool as soon as you move to the draw step.
