When are creatures no longer considered attacking or blocking?
Asked by thataddkid 11 years ago
For cards that refer to "attacking creatures" like Pitfall Trap and Divine Verdict , at what point do the creatures stop being "attacking"?
I ask because I saw a trick where if someone was attacking with two creatures, one small and one big you could chump block one and at the end of combat phase cast Celestial Flare .
Any help is appreciated, thank you very much!

Creatures become "not attacking" at the end of the combat phase, after players have passed priorities. The combat scene goes as follows, "beginning of combat"/"declare attackers"/"declare blockers"/"damage"/"end step". It is at the end of the end step when they stop attacking. Anytime between declare attackers and end of end step, you can cast the Celestial Flare and destroy their biggest creature.

Creatures stop being attacking or blocking creatures when the end of combat step ends. As the second main phase begins, there are no longer any attacking/blocking creatures. Therefore, the combat trick you mentioned is perfectly legal.
