When an opponent declares attackers and taps his creatures, can I Cloudshift + Sunblast Angel to destroy them before damage happens?

Asked by Orbow 8 years ago

My friend and I were playing a round of magic, he declared his attackers and tapped them. In response I used Cloudshift on my currently in play Sunblast Angel in hopes it would destroy them before combat damage was dealt. Is this proper thinking or am I completely mistaken?

This works.

Remember that combat damage is not dealt until the beginning of the combat damage step, which comes after the declare attackers and declare blockers steps are complete. Remember also that players must pass priority in succession over an empty stack in order to advance the game to the next step or phase.

Therefore, you may Cloudshift your Sunblast Angel at the end of either the declare attackers step or the declare blockers step and trigger its ability. The ability will destroy all tapped creatures before the game can progress to the next step or phase.
