When a creature "dies"..
Asked by WalzY 12 years ago
For example, with Blood Artist, or any card like Skirsdag High Priest, I'm unsure what constitutes a creature "dying". Does it have to enter the graveyard? for example if there's a Rest in Peace in play and you Searing Spear a creature to kill it..

I believe that answer to be incorrect actually, I think whats killing the creature like Pillar of Flame has to say if it would die exile it instead. The rest in peace would redirect the card into exile but it dosnt stop die or morbid from being true. Basically say it dies and then exile. Now blood wont get its trigger if it dies. Because triggers cant effect from exile.

I'm confused now... so if a card goes straight to exile it does die or it doesn't die? Also, what about tokens..

Rest in Peace stops morbid and Blood Artist triggers. RiP basically send it straight into exile

@RedCloud2012 - Rest in Peace says If a card or token would be put into a graveyard from anywhere, exile it instead. Because it says instead, the card never hits the graveyard, it goes straight to exile.
@WalzY - A creature that goes from the battlefield to exile does not die, it just gets exiled. It wont trigger any whenever a creature dies... effects like the one Blood Artist has.

If damage removes the creature from the battlfeild and the source of the damage dosnt have a replacement effect..then it dies..But RIP stops morbid and dies because the replacement effect takes out dies and morbids enters the graveyard from the battlfeild requirments.

Sorry official ruling. Man rest in peace is good! So cheap too

Rest in Peace is arguably one of the best graveyard-hosing spells in Magic.
Everything in Denial048's first post is correct.

Wait, so does Pillar of Flame do the same thing? Since it has an "exile instead" clause at the end, does it not trigger Blood Artist and Morbid either?

Deadlyhello, yep, that's right. So be careful with cards like Pillar of Flame and whenever a creature dies... triggers.

Dying is a term in magic that basically means whenever a creature is sent from the battlefield to the graveyard. It doesn't care if it was sacrificed, destroyed or sent there by SBA's (such as lethal damage), just as long as it enters the graveyard. Rest in Peace creates a replacement effect, so instead of going to graveyard cards are exiled. Any creature that would normally die will NOT trigger Blood Artist when RIP is on the field.
