What happens when you copy a spell with X in its cost?
Asked by Lord007 11 years ago
Specifically: I have Echo Mage on the field and at level 4. I cast Prosperity for X=10. Copy twice. Does everyone draw 30 cards total or is X 0 in the copies so everyone draws 10?
From the Gatherer
"6/15/2010: If the spell the ability copies has an X whose value was determined as it was cast (like Earthquake does), each copy has the same value of X as the original spell."
Everyone would draw 30 cards in this case.

I thought I heard somewhere that it was X UNLESS it was on the stack. Can anyone verify?

Sorry that was worded wrong that was supposed to say: "I thought I heard somewhere that X was 0 UNLESS it was on the stack. Can anyone verify?" And then someone verified. Thanks guys!

To answer your follow up question - X IS considered 0 in every zone except the stack.
Source: Comprehensive rules.
"202.3b When calculating the converted mana cost of an object with an X in its mana cost, X istreated as 0 while the object is not on the stack, and X is treated as the number chosen for itwhile the object is on the stack."

The value of X is always 0, whethers you are considering converted mana cost, or copying the spell. If you copy this spell twice, everyone would draw 10 cards.
