What happens when split/fuse cards are copied/replicated?

Asked by pookypuppy6 12 years ago

Okay, so I'm going to be purchasing my Electrodeux deck and it has a fuse card in it (Turn//Burn). I am fuzzy on how it works with being copied and being replicated, and I'd like to clarify things before I purchase the deck.

COPY: There is a possibility of Melek, Izzet Paragon copying Turn//Burn. If I cast it for one side, do I copy that side, either side, or the left-hand side only (the first one)? If I cast it for both sides, what happens?

REPLICATE: I want to know how to work a Fuse card with Djinn Illuminatus ? What sides am I permitted to replicate (and therefore, for what combination of costs)?

First of all, you can only fuse a card when you cast it from your hand. So, you can not fuse a card from your libary with Melek, Izzet Paragon . When you copy a fused spell (that you casted from your hand) via say, Reverberate you copy both halves of the spell. If you only casted one half, you only copy that half.

With Djinn Illuminatus you would only be able to replicate the exact circumstances of the cast spell, for the same cost. If you fuse Breaking and Entering you can replicate it for 4RBBU. You cannot replicate only part of it. The reverse is true as well.

If you cast Turn / Burn for Turn, from the top of your library, you only copy the Turn part. This is because a Split Card on the stack only has one set of characteristics. That set can be, Turn, Burn or both of them combined to a single spell. Thus what you play is what you can copy.

With a Djinn Illuminatus you could replicate in the same way - what you play is what you can replicate.

So, just so I've got this straight in my head:

With Melek, Izzet Paragon I can cast Turn or Burn but not both from the top of my library and the copy will be that of whatever side I chose.

With Djinn Illuminatus I am able to replicate whatever I cast the spell as, whether it be Turn, Burn or both. That means the cost is whatever I paid for it initially minus any alterations.
