What happens when I use Supernatural Stamina on a mutated creature?

Asked by doodkyle 2 years ago

If I have Otrimi, the Ever-Playful mutated onto any create, my opponent casts Murder on otrimi and I respond with Supernatural Stamina do both otrimi and it's mutation target return to the battlefield as separate creatures?

Otrimi's entire mutate stack will return to the board as separate tapped creatures.

The rule of thumb with mutate is the mutate stack is treated as one entity with all abilities of the stack whilst on the board, and as soon as it moves to any other zone, the stack separates.

TheRealSpecialK I was aware of this general rule of thumb, but as I began thinking about what happens in this situation I realized an argument could be made either way. When the cards "split" they are in the graveyard, and both were technically under the effect of supernatural stamina, so do both come back? Or does supernatural stamina only want to bring back one creature so it brings back what's on top?

It brings back all the pieces of the merged permanent. The following is from the detailed rules for "Merging with Permanents":

723.3c If an effect can find the new object that a merged permanent becomes as it leaves the battlefield, it finds all of those objects. (See rule 400.7.) If that effect causes actions to be taken upon those objects, the same actions are taken upon each of them.
