What does Jace, the Mind Sculptor do?
Asked by genuine139 10 years ago
I get its first two abilities but the last one says: "Exile all cards from target players library, then that player shuffles his or her hand into his or her library." I don't get it. Exile their library, then shuffle their hand into the exiled library? Is this a win condition?

His last ability doesn't exile the library. The library is a zone and cannot be targeted or destroyed. When the ability resolves all of the cards that were in the library go to the exile zone and all cards that were in your opponents hand are shuffled and put into their library.
It is a win condition as they will most likely have few or no cards in hand and will end up being decked very quickly.

Um... his ability definitely exiles the library. It doesn't target it, it targets the player, but it exiles all cards from it.
"Exile all cards from target player's library"
That's pretty definitive.
As far as the rest of your post, I'm not sure how that's any different from what I said.

@kmcree: I would file it under nitpicking semantics. It is accurate from a technical sense to say that the library itself is not exiled, as a library can exist w/ no cards in it.
I wouldn't personally say that "it exiles your library is wrong" but some people revel in pedantry, I guess.

The reason I answered that way was because I know people who attempt to shuffle their hand into the exiled portion of the library. Many newer players think of the library as a group of cards not a place where cards go. The concept of zones is something that is very important when playing modern, legacy or EDH. Additionally the user who asked the question appeared to be thinking that the library was a stack of cards rather than a place to put cards.

Thank you all as your discussion taught me two things: the cards effect and the true meaning of the library.

It means essentially that whatever cards they had in their hand now become their library. All the cards that were in the library are exiled, and replaced by the cards in their hand. So it can be a win con, as they probably don't have many cards in hand and will be milled quickly.
