waste not and the clean up step, also loxodon smiter

Asked by dragonchild2994 9 years ago

Waste Not lets you receive a bonus for whenever an opponent discards a card, will i receive some stuff if my opponent has to many cards in hand at the end of their turn when they have to discard cards from their hand to reduce their hand size back to 7?

also if my opponent discards a Loxodon Smiter due to my affect of some sort, do i still get the 2/2 zombie token ?

First Question: Yes because the opponent is still discarding cards if they have too many cards in hand.

Second Question: Im pretty sure because it says "if a spell or ability an opponent controls causes you to discard loxodon smiter". For Loxodon Smiter to go to the battlefield, it would have to be discarded.

Answer to part 1:

514.3. Normally, no player receives priority during the cleanup step, so no spells can be cast and no abilities can be activated. However, this rule is subject to the following exception:
--- 514.3a At this point, the game checks to see if any state-based actions would be performed and/or any triggered abilities are waiting to be put onto the stack (including those that trigger at the beginning of the next cleanup step). If so, those state-based actions are performed, then those triggered abilities are put on the stack, then the active player gets priority. Players may cast spells and activate abilities. Once the stack is empty and all players pass in succession, another cleanup step begins. (Source: Cmprehensive Rules)

Answer to part 2:

If you discard Loxodon Smiter and put it onto the battlefield, you've still discarded a card. Abilities that trigger when you discard a card (such as the one from Liliana's Caress) will still trigger. (Source: Gatherer)

Note to answer 1: Yes, the discard in the cleanup step will trigger Waste Not like any other discard would. It then follows the procedure mentioned above.

Loxodon Smiter will be discarded, but it has a replacement effect that changes the zone it goes to when being discarded

Uh Loxodon Smiter will not go to the battlefield. It specifically states "when an opponent causes you to discard". Not when you discard.

@Kiora_Fan-01: The part about Loxodon Smiter is unrelated to the cleanup discard. You can see that the OP says: ...if my opponent discards a Loxodon Smiter due to my affect of some sort...
