Player A attacks with a 20/20 creature.
Player B blocks with Wall of Hope .
How much life does Player B gain?

More broadly, creatures always deal combat damage equal to their power, even if that much damage is unnecessary.
119.2a Damage may be dealt as a result of combat. Each attacking and blocking creature deals combat damage equal to its power during the combat damage step.
Given this information and assuming the 20/20 attacker didn't have trample, it would have dealt all 20 damage to the Wall of Hope . As a result, Wall of Hope 's ability would trigger, Wall of Hope would die, and you would gain 20 life when the ability resolved.

the only exeption is Trample.
for example: if Ghoultree was blocked by Wall of Hope Player B gains 10 life.but if Doomgape was blocked by Wall of Hope Player B "gains" 3 life them lost 4 (because Wall of Hope ""prevent"" 3 damage)

Player B gains 20 life. It doesn't matter that 20 damage was overkill. It was still dealt 20 damage before it died, so 20 life is gained.
