Varchild's War-Riders+AEther Flash+Dingus Staff. Does this work?

Asked by Rothmog 12 years ago

With Dingus Staff and AEther Flash on the table, will the cumulative upkeep of card:Varchild's War-Riders kill the opponent due to their token creatures dying when they come into play due to the AEther Flash , and going to the graveyard to trigger Dingus Staff ?

It works just fine. When you pay the upkeep cost for card:Varchild's War-Riders, token creatures are put onto the battlefield under your opponent's control. This triggers AEther Flash . When the creatures die from lethal damage, this will trigger Dingus Staff .

Any specific reason you were thinking it didn't work, or was it just because it sounded too good to be true?

The token you put under your opponent's control via card:Varchild's War-Riders will die upon entering the battlefield . The tokens will hit the graveyard just before being removed entirely from the game, dealing 2 damage to the opponent.

In summary, yes, the entirety of your proposed combo will work, assuming your opponent has nothing to stop it.

I was not sure that the tokens would trigger the Dingus Staff as there has been much debate within our circle on that subject, mostly after this deck was created and started winning. I love the idea behind card:Varchild's War-Riders and was looking for a way to counter its cumulative upkeep without having to rely on single card solutions like Tremor or Pyroclasm

Ah, I see. Yes, when a token creature dies it does go to the graveyard, but then it ceases to exist the next time state based actions are checked (right before the next time a player would get priority). Because it did actually touch the graveyard, it will trigger any effect that cares about such things.

Thank you for the clarification on this issue. I would hate to have to dismantle one of my favorite pet decks because it was I who did not understand the mechanics.
