Two Sunglasses of Urza

Asked by rwillians 11 years ago

I have two Sunglasses of Urza .Then I changed one with Mind Bend , changing to 'You may spend red mana as though it were black mana.'.

So, can I use white mana as though it were black mana?

Mind Bend can only affect the instances of one certain color-word in the text. You can't affect both words (white and red) with one Mind Bend .

If you used two Mind Bend to do it, then yes that would work. Or you could just make the one say "You may spend white mana as though it were black mana".

For example, I change only one Sunglasses of Urza to 'You may spend red mana as though it were black mana', using two Mind Bend .

Following the two Sunglasses that way - using white as though red - using red as though black, can I use white as a black mana?

Since the effect is a replacement effect instead of a mana-generating effect, could you use Sunglasses of Urza in a mono-white EDH deck to activate an ability with a red mana requirement?

For example, you're playing a Thalia, Guardian of Thraben deck and you somehow gain control of a Grim Lavamancer . Could you use the effect of Sunglasses of Urza to activate Grim Lavamancer ?

Actually, thinking about it a bit more, no you could not.

The white mana in your pool is still just white mana; it doesn't actually become red so you can't use it as if it were black.

Sunglasses of Urza isn't a replacement effect; it just changes the rules for how you may spend white mana. Though yes, you could use the glasses to activate Grim Lavamancer in a mono-white deck.

Sunglasses of Urza allows you to spend mana of one colour in your mana pool as though it were mana of another colour.

If you only have one colour of mana generation in play, changing the first colour word in Sunglasses of Urza is going to make that instance of Sunglasses useless, because you can't put that colour of mana in your mana pool.

Changing multiple Sunglasses into a chain also won't do anything.

What it -will- do however, is allow you in EDH to activate abilities that require mana outside your commander's colour identity. Because it doesn't -make- mana of other colours, it just allows you to spend the mana you already made as though it were another kind of mana.

@Devonin: Of course that would require that you had somehow stolen a permanent with such ability from another player because you can't have cards with abilities outside your commander's color identity in your deck in the first place.

Of course. But I can see a world where you use a mind bend in a blue deck to make sunglasses let you spend blue as red, and then steal some red cards. Maybe only in the sideboard, but if you're playing a "steal your stuff" deck, maybe.
