True-Name Nemesis help?

Asked by Sparda1127 11 years ago

It's been the topic of a lot of questions in my casual playgroup, and it's gotten a lot of mixed answers so I decided to ask it here...

Would True-Name Nemesis be protected from Planeswalker abilities like Kiora, the Crashing Wave 's +1? My opponent still controls Kiora and he would have to target True-Name which he can't do, right?

Thanks so much to anyone that can answer this for me!

Short answer is yes. Kiora cannot target the Nemesis since it's controlled by the chosen player that Nemesis has protection from.

You are correct; the Kiora would not be able to target the True-Name Nemesis .

The best place to find FAQ's on a card is that card's Gatherer entry. Here's an excerpt from True-Name Nemesis :

  • "Protection from a player is a new variant of the protection ability. It means the following: -- True-Name Nemesis cant be the target of spells or abilities controlled by the chosen player...."

But my friends try to tell me that Planeswalkers are counted as other players, so is there any truth to that, and if so, does it get around the protection rule?

Planeswalkers are not players. Players are human (or bot) participants in a game. Planeswalkers are cards/permanents controlled by a player.
