Triggers after damage step. Wurmcoil Engine vs Spitebellows.

Asked by Pheardemons 6 years ago

So let's say my opponent has a Wurmcoil Engine in play and I have Spitebellows is on my side of the battlefield. My opponent swings with Wurmcoil Engine and I block with Spitebellows. There is no other interaction at this point. My opponent will gain 6 life, but how will the triggers resolve between the Wurmcoil Engine death trigger and the Spitebellows leaves play trigger? Will the tokens be created, and then I can target one of them with Spitebellows? Or, do the triggers enter the stack as Wurmcoil Engine, then Spitebellows so the damage will have to happen first before the tokens are created?

Also, if the situation is reversed and I swing with Spitebellows and my opponent blocks with Wurmcoil Engine, are the triggers stacked differently?

For both versions, either attacking or blocking, targets must be chosen for Spitebellows as its ability goes on the stack. So neither the original Wurmcoil Engine nor its tokens will legal targets for Spitebellows because no matter how they are ordered on the stack, the tokens won't be on the battlefield to declare as a target.
