Tribal Equipment and type-changing

Asked by linkofhyrule 11 years ago

If i were to change a creature's type (after it enters the battlefield), but before an equipment's trigger resolves, will it still equip if it's the no longer the same type?

Example:
Opponent casts/resolves a Shaman creature, while controlling a Thornbite Staff
In response to the equipment's ability "whenever a Shaman creature comes into play, you may attach ~ to it.", i activate Boldwyr Intimidator 's ability to make it a Coward.
Boldwyr's ability resolves, and his Shaman is now a Coward.

Option 1: As his creature is no longer a Shaman, it won't be equipped.
Option 2: Regardless of creature type, since it entered as a Shaman, it will be equipped.

I'm leaning to Option 2, but i'm unsure. Gatherer isn't any help on this, as it doesn't address type-changing on the tribal equipment's rulings

"It" will always refer to whatever triggered the ability, regardless of whether or not it's still a Shaman. You can attach Thornbite Staff either way.

The only reason an ability like this would fail after a type-change would be if it was written in a different way, to have what's called an "intervening if clause". For example: "Whenever a creature enters the battlefield, if it's a Shaman, you may attach Thornbite Staff to it". An ability written that way would check the triggering condition (being a Shaman) both at the time the ability would trigger and at the time it would start resolving. If it isn't true at the time it would trigger, then it doesn't trigger. If it isn't true at the time it would start resolving, then nothing happens.
