Transforming Creatures

Asked by demongod 11 years ago

I'm not asking this just to be confusing, this could lead to a cool deck idea.

If I have a Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip out, and then Ixidron enters, what happens? Does he transform, or turn into Ravager of the Fells  Flip , or just "a 2/2 creature?"

Also, would using Mask of the Mimic on a Ravager of the Fells  Flip mean searching for a copy and putting on the battlefield, or searching your library and finding nothing?

The second and the second.

Turning a transformer face down doesn't transform it. Although the second version of the cards is where cards normally have backs, the game doesn't consider that when turning things face down. It would be a blank 2/2 creature.

While in any other zone than the battlefield, transformers only have their front side (the one with mana cost). In your library, you only have cards named Huntmaster of the Fells  Flip . There are no Ravager of the Fells  Flip cards there. Your search would yeald no results in this scenario.

A double-faced card can't be turned face down. Ixidron doesn't do anything at all to a double-faced creature (note that the current wording of Ixidron corrects "They're 2/2 creatures" to be reminder text instead of rules text).

711.6. A double-faced permanent always has the status "face up" (see rule 110.6). Double-faced permanents can't be turned face down. If a spell or ability tries to turn a double-faced permanent face down, nothing happens.

Well, kinda. It DOES face down, but doesn't transform. It will become a 2/2 (with no abilities I think), but it won't transform. Transforming and being turned face down are different actions. Although in real-life the action is similar, the game treats them as different things.

That ruling is awful. The placeholder cards still have the regular Magic back. Transform cards can still be exiled face-down. But it is unfortunately true that they can't exist on the battlefield in the state "face-down". It's simply not applicable to transform cards, and nothing happens.
