Trampling/Double Striking through Favored Hoplite

Asked by randomthing 11 years ago

My brother and I are running basic heroic decks to test out THEROS. I'm running a Nya deck while he's running a Bant deck. I have a Fabled Hero while he has a tapped Favored Hoplite , so I declare Fabled Hero as an attacker. He plays Trident Tactics and untaps Favored Hoplite, proc his heroic and giving him 0/+3. In response, I blood rush Fabled Hero with Ghor-Clan Rampager , proc my own heroic and giving him +4/+4 and trample. In total, my attacking Fabled Hero is 7/7 with double strike and trample, the blocker is a Favored Hoplite who's heroic is active and is a 2/6. My question is does any of the damage being dealt by Fable Hero go through? Or does Favored Hoplite's heroic stop all of it?

But I think Hoplite blocks damage equal to its toughness and the rest goes to the opponents life.

You've made a mistake. Heroic only triggers when the controller of the permanent targets that permanent with a spell. Bloodrush is an activated ability, so it doesn't trigger heroic abilities. Your Fabled Hero will only be a 6/6 with double strike and trample.

Now, trample cares about damage assignment. It doesn't care about what happens after damage. During the first combat damage step, your Fabled Hero will assign 6 damage to Favored Hoplite . The damage will be prevented. Then, in the second combat damage step, Fabled Hero will again assign 6 damage to Favored Hoplite because Favored Hoplite does not have damage marked on it (the damage was prevented). Favored Hoplite will assign two damage to Fabled Hero .

First of all, Bloodrush doesn't trigger Heroic because Heroic can only be triggered by spells. Bloodruch is an ability, not a spell. So you're Fabled Hero is actually still a 2/2.

In your scenario, Fabled Hero deals 2 damage to Favored Hoplite with first strike damage, which is them prevented by Favored Hoplite 's Heroic. Then Fabled Hero and Favored Hoplite deal 2 normal damage to each other. Favored Hoplite prevents the 2 damage dealt to it and Fabled Hero dies.

For the sake of comparison, let's say Fabled Hero was able to get up to a 7/7. Then Fabled Hero would deal 6 first strike damage to Favored Hoplite , and the 1 extra damage would carry over to your opponent because of trample. Favored Hoplite 's Heroic ability would prevent the 6 damage that was dealt to it. Then Fabled Hero deals 7 normal damage and Favored Hoplite deals 2 normal damage to each other. Again, Favored Hoplite 's Heroic ability would prevent the 6 damage that was dealt to it, with the 1 extra damage carrying over to your opponent because of trample.

Oh... I forgot to add the Bloodrush boost to my first scenario. Oops. Fabled Hero would be a 6/6, but would still deal no trample damage to your opponent, because Favored Hoplite would absorb the 6 damage during both combat steps.
